News Blog Category - News This holiday season, as carols tell of a special star that shone long ago, Marion High School’s state-of-the-art planetarium will put on a special show that explores the wonders of the night sky.

The public is invited to MHS for “Seasonal Stargazing: Winter and Season of Lights”. Showings will be as follows:
  • 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9
  • 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10
Admission is free, but seating is limited and on a first-come, first-seated basis on the day of the show. Doors will open about 30 minutes before each showing. Enter MHS through Door 22 at the front of the building. The show lasts about an hour.

The planetarium at MHS was renovated in fall 2012. It boasts state-of-the-art LED cove lighting; 5.1 surround sound system with JBL cinema series speakers that push 2400 watts of power; a Digitarium Kappa projector that broadcasts full dome shows; and seating for 58.

Marion Community Schools is pleased to be able to present this special show to the public and share our exceptional facilities with the community in this way.

It's that time of year again when our calendars start filling up with holiday plans! Consider adding this special event to your family's plans:

The Marion High School Music Department offers a special concert guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit! The public is invited to the Walton Performing Arts Center at MHS for the annual Holiday Extravaganza, which features choral and instrumental music by our talented young musicians. The show is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6. Admission is free.

News Blog Category - News Marion High School's choral department is bringing a sweet opportunity back to town: Dessert Theater is Nov. 18!

This special event features performances by our talented singers in the 26th Street Innovations and Virtuoso choirs. In addition, you'll get to enjoy your choice of several desserts: cheesecake, chocolate cake, pecan pie, apple pie.

There are two performances scheduled, bot on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Roseburg Event Center, 2983 W. 38th St. Tickets are on sale now for both the 3 p.m. and the 7 p.m. shows.

Through Friday, Nov. 10, tickets are $10 each. After that, the price rises to $12 each. So get yours today! Choir members are taking ticket orders now. If you don't know a choir member, contact the Marion High School office for more information.

News Blog Category - News Students at Frances Slocum Elementary are learning language skills in a whole new way: through arts integration fueled by the Honeywell Foundation.

Arts integration is an approach to teaching and learning that provides multiple ways for students to make sense of what they learn. It goes beyond the initial step of helping students learn and recall information, and it challenges students to take the information and facts they have learned and do something with them to build deeper understanding.

The Honeywell Foundation’s Educational Outreach program is bringing artists to Frances Slocum to provide experiences in the classroom built around specific Indiana language arts standards. These experiences will help students develop specific skills and close gaps in literacy and numeracy, the foundational skills that they will build on for the rest of their lives.

Frances Slocum’s administration and staff are excited for the opportunity to be a part of the Honeywell Foundation’s Educational Outreach program for 2017-18. Arts integration experiences will continue throughout the next two weeks in grades one through four.
